Description

This Web Map Service delivers false color infrared imagery from the National High Altitude Photography (NHAP) program. The delivered images have been re-processed for the service. In most client software, the default spatial reference system of this service will be Geographic Coordinates, WGS84. The service supports delivery directly to client software in several other coordinate systems (see Supplemental Information).

The NHAP photography were acquired at 40,000 feet above mean terrain with flight lines centered on the 1:24,000-scale USGS map series.

The output orthomosaic tiles are rendered as a target resolution of 0.75m ground sample distance (GSD.) The delivered orthomosaics have a target horizontal accuracy when measured against the NAIP imagery of +/- 10m. There was no attempt to color balance the mosaic images. Thus, significant differences in color, including striping between adjacent flight lines and images is present in the mosaics and in the service.

The National High Altitude Photography (NHAP) program was initiated in 1980 and coordinated by the U.S. Geological Survey to acquire aerial photography of the 48 conterminous United States every 5 years. This interagency program was designed to eliminate duplicate efforts in various Government programs and to maximize the use of Government funds to build a uniform archive for multiple purposes.

The metadata for this imagery indicates a beginning date of 4/3/1981 and ending date of 5/13/1987.
